Hungary’s Milák wins uncontestable gold in Tokyo 2020 – Video

Defending World Champion Kristóf Milák won the final of the 200-meter butterfly at the Tokyo Olympics on Wednesday morning (Hungarian time), thus winning a historic gold medal. The other Hungarian finalist, Tamás Kenderesi, finished in fourth place.

M4 Sport writes that this is the first Olympic gold medal of the 21-year-old swimming classic.

Interestingly, he is now the European Champion, World Champion, world record holder and now also Olympic champion of the track.

The swimmer took the lead in the first 50 metres, even though his South African rival Chad le Clos, London’s champion, started quite strong. Although Milák fell to third place at 100 metres, he gained a confident advantage by the second hundred as his rivals became tired.

The only question in the finish was Milák’s time and whether he would set a new World Record. Finally, with 1:51.25 minutes, the third-best result of all time, he overthrew the legendary Michael Phelps’ Beijing 2008 Olympic record.

Milák won the third medal of the Hungarian Olympic team and the second gold (after Áron Szilágyi making world history) in Tokyo 2020.

Statement by Kristóf Milák after the final:

“I fell so apart because of the swimsuit case (his trunk broke in the call room, so he had to change very quickly) that I told myself, let’s just swim this.”
